The Origins of the Slim Watch

Bulgari then changed the pace. In July 2022 Richard Mille released the RM UP-01 Ferrari at 1.75mm, achieved by spreading the movement’s components across a single layer over a 51mm by 39mm grade 5 titanium case rather than stacking them conventionally. The movement itself measured 1.18mm. It was limited to 150 pieces at $1,888,000.

Bulgari reclaimed the record in 2024 with the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC at 1.70mm, in a 40mm case, built around the manually wound BVL 180 calibre at 1.50mm with a tungsten carbide component serving as both mainplate and caseback. Part of the final tenth of a millimetre came from optimising the sapphire crystal. It is also the thinnest COSC-certified chronometer ever produced, and it was made in twenty pieces.

The pattern across seventy years is consistent: each record has required abandoning a little more conventional construction. The case has gradually stopped being a container and started being a structural component of the movement itself.
